Graduate Teacher Training Programme (GTP)

A guide for potential trainees (GTP)

Is GTP the right route for you! please click here to check (pdf format).

How does the GTP work?

The GTP is an employment-based route to Qualified Teacher Status. The programme usually takes one academic year, during which trainees are employed by the school as an unqualified teacher whilst training. The training is provided by a recognised provider (often a teacher training Institute or a training school) who will draw up an individualised training plan for each candidate. Trainees attend regular sessions with the provider, whilst spending the rest of their time in school, teaching classes and observing other teachers.

Please note:

  • applications from overseas trained teachers will not be considered, as government funding is for initial teacher training only
  • The GTP is recognised in England and Wales but may not be recognised abroad.

Where can you complete the GTP?

The GTP can be completed in any English or Welsh maintained school, as long as the school are prepared to employ an unqualified teacher for the duration of the programme. Independent schools can be involved in the GTP, but these applications would have to be self-funded. Pupil Referral Units cannot employ GTP trainees, or have any involvement with the training.
