Graduate teachers (GTs) must be employed in a maintained school
as a trainee teacher for the duration of their training programme. Trainee teachers
receive a salary from their school, which is at least the minimum point on the unqualified
teacher pay scale. Depending on the trainee’s responsibilities and experience the school may pay more.
Once the training is complete, most trainees remain at their school as Newly Qualified Teachers.
GTP trainees are not eligible for a Golden Hello, as they have already benefited from a training salary.
Contract
GTs are given a one-year temporary training contract. On successful completion
of their training year, GTs will be expected to accept a post in the school and stay for two years,
if a suitable vacancy should arise. If the offer of a post is turned down without strong mitigating
circumstances, they may be requested to repay some of the training costs incurred by the school.
Training and Development Agency (TDA) funded places
The TDA has a limited number of funded places on GTP programmes. On a funded
place, the TDA will pay the GTP provider a training grant to contribute to the cost of training.
In most cases on the GTP, the TDA will also pay a salary grant to the school to contribute to
the cost of the salary.
Self funded places
If the provider does not have any TDA funded places available, applicants may still
be able to participate in a GTP, if the school is willing to cover the cost of the graduate teacher’s training
and salary. Check with individual providers if this option is available.
