Professional standards for QTS
The standards for the award of QTS are statements that set out what
a trainee teacher must know, understand and be able to do, to be awarded QTS. The QTS
standards apply to all trainee teachers, regardless of the route they take to QTS.
The standards are organised in three inter-related sections:
- Professional attributes: these standards outline the attitudes and commitment to be expected
of anyone qualifying to be a teacher.
- Professional knowledge and understanding: these standards require newly qualified
teachers (NQTs) to be confident in the subjects they teach and to have a clear understanding
of how all children and young people make progress.
- Professional skills: these standards relate to the skills of teaching, including planning, assessing, monitoring, giving feedback, team working and collaboration.
